چکیده

Cloud services are becoming centralized at several georeplicated datacentres. These services replicate data within a single datacentre to tolerate isolated failures. Unfortunately, disasters’ effects can not be entirely avoided, as existing approaches migrate a copy of data to backup datacentres only after data have been stored at a primary datacentre. Upon disaster, all data not yet migrated can be lost. In this paper, we propose and implement SDN-KVS, a disaster-tolerant key-value store, which provides strong disaster resilience by replicating data before storing. To this end, SDN-KVS features a novel communication primitive, SDN-cast, that leverages Software Defined Network (SDN) in two ways: it offers a SDN-multicast primitive to replicate critical request flows and a SDN-anycast primitive to redirect access request flows to the closest available datacentre. Our performance evaluation indicates that SDN-KVS ensures that no data are lost and that traffic gets redirected across long distance key-value store replicas within 30 s after a datacentre outage.

Can SDN Mitigate Disasters?

Datacenter networks and services are at risk in the face of disasters. Existing fault-tolerant storage services cannot even achieve a nil recovery point objective (RPO) as client-generated data may get lost before the termination of their migration across geo-replicated datacenters. SDN has proved instrumental in exploiting application-level information to optimise the routing of information. I...

Link Capacity Planning for Fault Tolerant Operation in Hybrid SDN/OSPF Networks

Link capacity dimensioning is the periodic task where ISPs have to make provisions for sudden traffic bursts and network failures to assure uninterrupted operations. This provision comes in the form of link working capacities with noticeable amounts of headroom, i.e., spare capacities that are used in case of congestions or network failures. Distributed routing protocols like OSPF provide conve...

SMaRtLight: A Practical Fault-Tolerant SDN Controller

The increase in the number of SDN-based deployments in production networks is triggering the need to consider fault-tolerant designs of controller architectures. Commercial SDN controller solutions incorporate fault tolerance, but there has been little discussion in the SDN literature on the design of such systems and the tradeoffs involved. To fill this gap, we present a by-construction design...

Region-based fault-tolerant distributed file storage system design in networks

Distributed storage of data files in different nodes of a network enhances its fault tolerance capability by offering protection against node and link failures. Reliability is often achieved through redundancy in one of the following two ways: (i) storage of multiple copies of the entire file at different locations (nodes) or (ii) storage of file segments (not entire files) at different node lo...

SecondSite: Disaster Protection for the Common Server

Disaster-tolerant systems are complex and expensive constructions that have hitherto been the provision of only the very rich or the very scared. The current state of the art for surviving site-wide failures is to mirror persistent storage to a remote location and cold-start applications there in the event of failure. This requires delicate, tailored modifications to production software to rest...
